Starter Company Program Guidelines - Young Adults

Starter Company Plus is a mentoring and training program for entrepreneurs 18 years of age and older (who are not returning to school), and offers eligible participants an opportunity to receive up to $5,000 in grant dollars.
Under the program, services include:

  • training and business skills development;
  • advice and mentor opportunities from local business leaders;
  • where eligible, a micro-grant of up to $5,000 to start, purchase, or expand a business; and
  • assistance in developing and modelling business plans in order to acquire additional capital.

Are you Eligible?

You are eligible for the Starter Company Plus program if you are:

  • 18 years of age or older;
  • a resident of Ontario;
  • a Canadian citizen or permanent resident;
  • not a full time student and not returning to school;
  • proposing a new company, expansion of an existing company or buying a business from a retiring entrepreneur;
  • prepared to commit to a minimum average of 35 hours a week to running a business;
  • prepared to attend monthly meetings for at least six months after the start or assumed ownership of the business; and
  • have not received a Starter Company or Starter Company Plus grant in the past;


Your funding application will be judged based on: 

  • the feasibility of the business;
  • the quality of applicant - teachability, entrepreneurial aptitude;
  • the potential for job creation;
  • the start-up budget/financing needs of the business;
  • sectoral priorities in the community and the region; and
  • the cash/in-kind contributions of the participant.
