Recent Tourism Development projects include:

The $10-million Agawa Canyon Tour Train coach improvements, along with $1.02 million in audio/video technology upgrade, were complete and ready for riders in the summer of 2011. The enhancements are expected to significantly increase ridership on the tour, which is one of Northern Ontario's most significant tourism attractions.

  • A number of major events were recently held in, or are coming to, Sault Ste. Marie. These include the 2010 Scotties Tournament of Hearts, 2010 Finn Grand Fest, 2011 OCAA Men's Basketball Championships, 2011 International Hap Ki Do Canadian Open, 2012 Canadian Adult Recreation Hockey Association World Cup (CARHA) and 2013 National Midget AAA Telus Cup.
  • A successful Downtown Development Initiative, designed to encourage building façade improvements in the downtown core, was recently completed.  Government incentive investments totaling $1.355 million ($570,000 from the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs; $500,000 from FedNor; and $285,000 from the City) led to $9.8 million in spending from the private sector into this key area of the community.
  • The Hub Trail and Waterfront Walkway projects are completed and are providing a wonderful experience for both residents and visitors.
